How might I reclaim property I lost?

When lost property is recovered and turned into NUPD, reasonable attempts are made to identify, notify, and return the property to the owner. To check whether your lost item has been turned into NUPD, review the list below of found property with no identification or call 847-491-3254 or email dssfoundproperty@northwestern.edu. You will be required to provide information to determine ownership.

When can I pick up my property?

To pick up recovered property at the NUPD station, you need to schedule an appointment by calling 847-491-3254 or emailing dssfoundproperty@northwestern.edu.

What identification or proof of ownership is required?

To pick up recovered property, you will be required to provide identification in the form of a government issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID card, or passport.

Depending on the nature of the property and the circumstances under which it was recovered, you may also need to provide proof of ownership.

How long will unclaimed property be held?

Unclaimed/unidentified property will be disposed of in accordance with state and local statutes and in most instances will not be held longer than six months after recovery.
